You’ll sometimes hear people talking about pets – or themselves – contracting “ringworm.” With such an ominous-sounding name, it must be bad, right?

Here’s a little quiz. Don’t worry, it won’t count toward your final grade. Which of these is ringworm most closely related to? A. Common cold B. Tapeworm C. Mushroom D. Earthworm

If you answered A, understand that ringworm isn’t a virus, and it can be treated in many ways, unlike the common cold, to which the only remedy is chicken-noodle soup. If you answered B, you’re on the right track, but ringworm isn’t a parasite in the usual sense, and it isn’t deadly. . . . → Read More: Ringworm

Ringworm outbreak at shelter infects eighteen adoptable pets

An October ringworm outbreak at the shelter has left eighteen of our twenty-one adoptable pets infected. Infected pets include:

Alameda Adriano (adopted after infection) Acosta Aguafria SilverBelle ChiangMai Siobhan Wasabe Lambert Fantasia Doolittle Melinda Six unnamed leMutte puppies

This leaves only Cupid (who is on “longtimers discount”), Surat (currently on “adoption pending”), and Zorro uninfected.

All of these pets (except, of course, Adriano, since he’s already with his new owner) entered treatment on Monday, November 1.

It is important to understand that ringworm is nothing to be afraid of. It is, in fact, even less serious of an infection than athlete’s foot or those mushrooms in your lawn. Stay tuned for a blog about ringworm and why it’s nothing to fear.

Does Doggy DNA Deliver?

Booduh

You may have heard about “doggy DNA tests,” which promise to tell you the breed composition of your mutt when you mail in their cheek cells, collected using a specialized swab. But do these tests really work?

In 2004, our Executive Director Kim adopted Booduh [left], an all-out mutt. To date, Booduh has received three separate doggy DNA tests, the proprietors of which shall remain unnamed.

All of these tests delivered wildly different results.

The first test was the most basic, returning Siberian Husky and Labrador Retriever [right].

The next test returned the most breeds of all, but none of them were shared with the others. The breeds it returned were:

German Pinscher

Black and Tan Coonhound

Boxer

Field Spaniel
