Abbott 1778

4 years old · Adopted

Abbott is a delightful 4 year old Great Pyrenees/Anatolian mix boy. For people he knows and loves, he is a cuddle-monster, rolling over for belly rubs and soaking up all the affection he can get. For strangers and others he doesn't know so well, he prefers to be a bit standoffish and doesn't approach them for attention until he gets to know them better. He seems to prefer women strangers over men strangers.

Just as he is selective about his human friends, he can also be selective about his dog friends. He came in with several other dogs, and they all have a bit of food protectiveness with each other, so may not have always all received enough food daily (leading to competition for resources). We find Abbott seems to be friendly with the female dogs from his original "pack" as long as there are no meals involved, so he will likely do well with a female dog friend if they can be fed separately. It's also possible that, over time in a forever home, he will learn the kibble is endless and will be able to be fed with the other dog. He had a trial placement as more of a family pet, but he did develop resource guarding issues with the other dogs in the family, so although he enjoyed being part of the family, he shouldn't live indoors with other dogs. He should do fine as an outdoor LGD with other dogs as long as they have different feeding stations.

Abbott should do well with children, cats, and livestock, and has lived with a large goat flock in the past (along with several other LGDs who were all fed separately).

All pets arrive spayed/neutered, dewormed, microchipped and vaccinated. Adoption fee for Abbott is a suggested minimum of $125 (more gratefully accepted). All pets are placed with a 30-day money-back trial period, to give pet and family enough time to discover any unknown allergies or other conflicts.

Can't come to Republic? Don't let that stop you! We have monthly transports to the Seattle area, delivering adopted pets to their new owners. If you can add a little to your donation to help us cover our volunteer driver's expenses, that would be great!
