VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

When we have the buildings completed, we will have numerous opportunities for volunteers.

If you have as little as one hour per month, we will have ways you can help!

Every day, we will need one volunteer to cover a one-hour cat-care shift, plus two volunteers to cover morning and late afternoon/evening dog-care shifts (which will usually range from one to two hours per shift).

We also hope to establish some regular hours each week when the public can come and visit the shelter pets; that will involve having two to three, three-hour shifts per week for people to volunteer as greeter/receptionist.

Other positions open to first-time volunteers are:

Telephone support (picking up messages and returning calls)

Stop the Cycle voucher coordinator (filling out pet logs for clients requesting assistance, and completing and sending vouchers as funds are available)

Pet Food Bank coordinator (filling out pet logs for clients requesting assistance, packaging up food and arranging for delivery or pickup)

Volunteer coordinator (scheduling volunteers to cover all pet-care and open-hours shifts)

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT:

LIN is our Dog Intake Director, an adopter, a dog foster parent, and Secretary of the shelter's Board of Directors. She and her husband Jim have been tireless foster parents for Ferry County's homeless dogs, and are looking forward to seeing the new dog kennel building open for business.

Lin has often had to make the difficult decisions about which dogs to accept into the adoption program, and which have to stay on a waiting list; that part of her volunteer duties will become much easier with the new kennel building, as she will be able to say "yes, we have space" much more often!

Lin and Jim have been responsible for keeping Buddy/Shepp, the senior hound rescued in 1996 from life on a chain, happy and healthy. They are also caring for Ancho, our special needs black lab pup, as he recovers from what might be juvenile Cushings disease.

We look forward to having Lin and Jim available for other special needs dogs; even when the shelter dog kennels are open, there will always be dogs that need the special TLC of a foster home.

After many years of fundraising and planning, the Forget Me Not Animal Shelter buildings are finally coming to fruition. We still need to raise approximately $35,000 to finish the project, which will enable us to greatly increase the numbers of homeless pets we are able to help.

The first, smaller building is our cat duplex, which we are lovingly calling our Microsoft Meow Manor because it was funded entirely by generous donations from cat-loving Microsoft employees, through their 2009 Cats of Microsoft calendar campaign. Between the Microsofties and the Microsoft corporate match, we were able to construct a beautiful double cat-habitat, featuring two large cat rooms, each with their own safely screened-in cat porch. Interior work and finishing work on the exterior is in progress right now, and we expect to have cats moved in very soon.

Even better, Microsoft is at it again, with their 2010 Cats of Microsoft calendar; preliminary indications show they have raised enough for us to build a second cat duplex in the spring! GO, MICROSOFTIES!!

Where we still need some help is with the larger dog kennel and office building, shown here in front of the cat building:

While we have already raised the funds for the exterior building, septic and water systems, and exterior electrical service, we still need that last $35,000 to finish the interior, install interior electrical, HVAC, and plumbing, and purchase needed privacy kennels, appliances, and other necessities.

That is where we need YOUR help. Come on, all you dog-lovers; don't let those cat-lovers at Microsoft outshine you! With your generous donations, we will be able to increase our maximum number of dogs in the adoption program from our sad current maximum of 3-4 at one time (spread among our handful of current foster homes), to as many as 20 housed in comfort! In Memoriam

The Forget Me Not website has a newly launched section, to honor pets in whose name memorial donations have been made.

The first featured pet on our Memoriam page is Cody:

Cody Clevenger, 7/10/86 - 5/24/04

"If someone would ask me to spell love, I would spell it 'Cody'. Cody was my Miniature Schnauzer who left me 6 weeks before his 18th birthday. I miss him and will always love him. Cody brought me so much happiness. He would make me laugh and knew when I was sad. He was my support when I lost a loved one. Cody was affectionate, curious, smart and very cute. I was so lucky to have him for so long. But the day came where I had to make the hardest decision of my life -- what I loved the most, I had to 'let go'. Losing his hearing and sight and getting cancer made Cody's life very difficult. What followed after Cody was gone was a time of emptiness and tears that come so easy.... For 3 years I am trying to do something good in memory of my Cody. I donate to the Forget Me Not Animal Shelter. By doing this I hope I am giving a dog waiting in the shelter a chance to find someone who will give him or her a good home and lots of love." - Ingrid
