Long-time shelter pets need your help

Spring is here, when our thoughts turn to… KITTENS!

Unfortunately, this year we have many juvenile and adult cats who have not yet found their forever homes.

Along with these beautiful cats, we have one amazing dog who just can’t seem to get noticed… he’s seen dozens of other dogs come in to the shelter, and then leave in two weeks, or a month, or two months, with their new people. Teague continues to wait, but he is growing depressed (see "The Big Black Dog Dilemma, featuring Teague").

We know many of you have already filled that empty spot in your family with a Forget Me Not pet, or perhaps you have used Forget Me Not to help a pet find a new home.

We’re not asking you to adopt one of these pets (though it would be lovely if you did).

Underweight Pets

Underfed Oatmeal at her January 15, 2011, arrival at the shelter.

If your pet looks like this, make sure that you’re feeding them enough; check the package on their food and make sure that you’re meeting or exceeding the feeding recommendations. If you are, check with your veterinarian: weight loss can be caused by parasites, thyroid disorders, diabetes, and other serious but treatable conditions.

Oatmeal on January 23, 2011, after gaining weight from proper feeding at the shelter.

Since her arrival at the shelter, Oatmeal has filled out nicely and has been adopted!

Ringworm outbreak at shelter infects eighteen adoptable pets

An October ringworm outbreak at the shelter has left eighteen of our twenty-one adoptable pets infected. Infected pets include:

Alameda Adriano (adopted after infection) Acosta Aguafria SilverBelle ChiangMai Siobhan Wasabe Lambert Fantasia Doolittle Melinda Six unnamed leMutte puppies

This leaves only Cupid (who is on “longtimers discount”), Surat (currently on “adoption pending”), and Zorro uninfected.

All of these pets (except, of course, Adriano, since he’s already with his new owner) entered treatment on Monday, November 1.

It is important to understand that ringworm is nothing to be afraid of. It is, in fact, even less serious of an infection than athlete’s foot or those mushrooms in your lawn. Stay tuned for a blog about ringworm and why it’s nothing to fear.

A ringworm outbreak at the shelter has left all our adoptable kittens and six new leMutte puppies infected. They are all in treatment as of Monday 11/1. Stay tuned for more details.

New adoptable cats: Sanjaya, Underwood, and Patches

Sanjaya, Underwood, and Patches (“RF group”) were born 8/9/10, and stayed with their mother until they were weaned; they are now in foster care, and are incredibly well socialized kittens (they even did a day at “show and tell”). They are cuddly, playful, and cute as can be, and will be wonderful family pets.

Clockwise from upper left: Abdula, Bowersox, Cavil, Cowell, Yokozawa, Kara, Jackson, Honshu

Cavil, Kara, Cowell, Abdula, and Bowersox (“group 2”) are siblings, and were brought to the shelter after their mother cat’s owner abandoned her. A kind neighbor took her in, raised her adorable kittens, then had mama kitty spayed and asked us to find great homes for these cuties.

These kittens, who were born 7/5/10, are all wonderfully socialized, and will be fantastic pets for any home. If you want more than one, these 5 have all been together since birth and can be mixed and matched in any combination with a happy result. Bowersox is a black/brown/grey tabby female with gorgeous markings.

Yokozawa, Honshu, and Jackson (“group 3”) are siblings, born 8/11/10, and were brought to the shelter as orphaned/abandoned . . . → Read More: New adoptable cats: Yokozawa and Honshu the Siamese mixes and Cavil, Kara, Cowell, Abdula, Bowersox, and Jackson

Cat adoptable since August 25, 2010: Clarkson

Clarkson’s person had an “oops” litter, spayed the mother cat, gave away Clarkson’s siblings, but didn’t find a home for this cutie so asked us to help find her the perfect forever home. Photo is from 8/26. She was born approximately 7/6/10.

Clarkson is a cute brown tabby girl; she tends to be cautious and watches others (especially cats) to figure out what she is supposed to do.

Cat adoptable since July 2, 2010: Agathon

Agathon was born around 5/28/10, and was found living with his semi-feral mother and siblings underneath a trailer. The person who found him handled him from a very young age, and he is now extremely well socialized and will make a great pet for any home. He is a very playful, healthy, and curious kitten who would enjoy being an indoor or indoor-outdoor cat. (His siblings have already been adopted).

Agathon is an adorable grey tiger boy with caramel accents; he’s a great mix of cuddly and frisky. Photo was taken on 8/16.

Cats adoptable since June 21, 2010: Simon, Cally, and Adama

Simon, Cally, and Adama were born around 5/24/10, and were turned in to the shelter as “bottle babies” – they were kittens from a feral mother cat, who has since been trapped, spayed, and returned to her colony. The kittens’ foster mom has had them since they were about 4 weeks old, and bottle fed them until they were old enough to eat on their own. As a result, they are extremely well socialized, and will make fantastic pets for any home.

Simon and Adama are virtually twins at first glance, so we have put blue paper collars on them with their names. Photos were taken on 8/16.
