Handsome Hank, born 6/1/2020, is a lerpy-derpy big ol' goofy pupper who can't wait to bring his brand of sunshine into your life. He's a German Shepherd/Labrador Retriever mix (with probably a few other things in the stew), and he LIVES to play fetch. Not great at giving the toy BACK yet, but boy does he love to chase it!
Hank is already housetrained and knows how to sit, though he gets SO EXCITED sometimes it's hard to get that butt on the floor. Because he has no idea he weighs 60 pounds, and still loves to jump up to share his excitement, we recommend no toddlers in his home, as they would be like bowling pins to Hank (and then they'd fall over, they'd cry, he'd feel TERRIBLE, no one wants that).
His former person says he has been tolerant of the turkeys and deer that roam through their place, and he can sometimes be a little territorial with other dogs on his home turf. At the shelter, he watches the other dogs with relaxed interest and has not shown any attitude issues at all. He has not experienced cats, and we will be cat testing him as soon as possible. If he doesn't show any intense prey drive toward cats (which he may not, if he leaves the turkeys and deer alone), then he would probably be OK sharing space with a dog-savvy, confident kitty. A scaredy-cat would likely run and become a living squeaky toy for a dog that loves fetch this much, so know your cat's temperament before deciding to give Hank a try!
He is super affectionate and a real happy-go-lucky guy. He tolerates bath time better than a lot of dogs, is a heavy chewer and loves sturdy chew toys, and - fair warning! - knows how to open doors that have a lever handle. Hank is a great combination of clever dog and goofy puppy and will be a great best friend. He needs the training he missed out on in his younger days, to remove his habits of jumping up and being "mouthy" (grabbing your hand gently with his mouth, such as when you are putting a leash on him). Luckily, he is VERY treat-motivated and learns quickly! A little positive training will turn this diamond in the rough into a polished gemstone you will love having by your side.
