Verde, a Great Pyrenees/Akita mix with probably a few other fun breeds tossed in for extra flavor, arrived as a stray and was never claimed. His estimated birth date is 2/7/19, and he currently weighs about 48 pounds; he may get a little bit bigger over the next few months, but is probably pretty close to full grown at this point, maybe up to 60-65 pounds ultimately.
Verde clearly was neglected in whatever home he had before arriving at the shelter. He came in knowing pretty much none of the good boy skills, and is working hard to pick up the basics, from sit to stay to housetraining. While the shelter volunteers adore him and are doing all they can to help him on the path toward training, he will benefit most from a strong one-on-one relationship with his new person, and will then be able to progress in leaps and bounds (though hopefully not ON his person, ha). He will be, not just a good boy, but a GREAT boy once given some consistent direction and a little time and love.
He enjoys playing with other dogs and is comfortable taking a more submissive role during his play. His time of neglect and homelessness left him with some food protectiveness which was most strongly exhibited when he first arrived at the shelter; although he would tolerate humans picking up his food bowl, he did not LIKE it, and definitely did not like other pets to be near him while he was eating what were probably his first full meals in who knows how long. This behavior has definitely improved since he arrived, and we anticipate it will continue to improve once he is in a stable home and getting regular all you can eat buffets. We'd recommend feeding separately from other pets until you are confident he has outgrown his protectiveness over his food. He seems pretty fixated on the cats he sees, so we recommend a no cats home for Verde.
Verde is gentle enough for dog-savvy children, though he does still tend to jump up and may knock over toddlers. Older children who can be involved in his training, know not to tug on ears or tails and not to sit on the dog, and can learn how to redirect jumping behaviors would be best for him.
Verde is absolutely loving learning how to make humans smile and dispense treats, and would really enjoy a family where he can be an integral part of the household's daily activities. He's been practicing his leash skills just for you. He'd love to go collect the mail with you, and help you set the table, and supervise as your training partner during your evening run, and then kick back with some Netflix and ice cream after a good workout. Teach him neglect is a thing of the past, love is his now and forever, and that he can learn how to play now that he isn't trying to find food and shelter without a roadmap.
All pets arrive spayed/neutered, dewormed, microchipped and vaccinated. Adoption fee for Verde is a suggested minimum of $95 (more gratefully accepted). All pets are placed with a 30-day money-back trial period, to give pet and family enough time to discover any unknown allergies or other conflicts.
