Adopted May 2009

12/5/13:

Good morning – we adopted Cocoa, a lovely Dachshund through your shelter about 5 years ago.  I just wanted to let you know that Cocoa died yesterday after a short battle with cancer.  We want to thank you for rescuing Cocoa.  She was a lovely animal and brought so much joy and laughter into our lives.  We are so grateful for the years we had with her.  We originally adopted Cocoa as a companion for our older Dachshund, Norman.  Cocoa and Norman became fast friends and Cocoa brightened Norman’s last year of life considerably.  After Norman’s death, Cocoa was inconsolable.  She spent hours searching the house for Norman and just couldn’t settle down.  Finally, after 6 weeks of this, we decided to get another Dachshund as a companion for Cocoa.  So, we got a puppy named Zoey.  Cocoa took Zoey under her wing and mothered Zoey.  Cocoa was amazingly patient with little Zoey and personified the expression “long-suffering”.  No matter how much Zoey climbed on Cocoa, or licked her or teased Cocoa with toys, Cocoa always responded patiently and lovingly to Zoey.  The two of them became inseparable.  Now we are all grieving for Cocoa, but we are glad that she is no longer in pain and that the last years of her life were happy ones.  Thank you so much for allowing us to adopt Cocoa.

5/8/09:   I just want to give you a quick update on Cocoa. First and foremost - we are quite smitten with her! She is a lovely, beautiful, sweet tempered dog and we feel so blessed to have her in our household. She has been a bit slow to warm up to us - but she is progressing well. The first few days, she mostly just watched us and didn't interact with us too much. We took our cue from her and gave her space and spoke to her often in soft, soothing tones and gave her lots of pats and praise. She started wagging her tail a couple of days ago and today had a big break through. She grabbed one of Norman's toys and dashed away with it - looking for her new daddy to chase her! She loved playing keep away from Roger and after a couple of minutes, Norman joined in the running, chasing and general mayhem! We are so delighted with our new little girl. Thank you so much for rescuing her. My heart hurts whenever I think of anyone shooting bbs at this softhearted little girl. But, she is happy now and well on her way to accepting us as her "forever" family. I'll send pictures as soon as I get some! Thank you again.
