Balto, a 6 1/2 year old husky mix (possibly with some Samoyed in there), arrived at the shelter as an owner surrender when his person's life situation changed, leaving no time for Balto. Balto's reportedly spent his first four years as a street dog on the Hopi reservation in Arizona, before being picked up as a stray and then adopted out to his prior owner. He has spent his life as an outside dog, but really wants to be given the opportunity to live as an indoor companion to his new person or family.
Balto isn’t much for chasing a ball or playing with toys but he sure loves to munch on pig ears, marrow bones and rawhide. His previous owner reported that he loves to explore and can be quite independent at times (typical of the breed and his life history). He is fond of chasing ground squirrels and cats (yikes!), was good at herding cows, and really loves off leash walks in the woods or going hunting or wood cutting with his person. He has great recall when far afield and was trusted to keep his people nearby and not run off too far. Reportedly, he can walk on a leash but it’s not his favorite thing as he will pull, although not overpower. They used to call him the little tugboat, haha.
While living in a fenced-in yard, Balto showed his boredom by chewing through wood fencing so he could set off in search of a more stimulating existence. The key to a happy new life for Balto will be exercise and companionship (and, if he ever does need to stay outside by himself for a short time, chain link fencing rather than wood).
While he does love to spend time in our dog yard he is quick to run back to the door and come inside. We have discovered that Balto is happiest when hanging out on the office couch with volunteers, or following them around as they do their duties. His ideal placement will be with active people who allow him to be an indoor outdoor dog and who won’t leave him outside for long periods of time where boredom might get him into trouble. He likes children, even small babies and is good with senior citizens. When he gets excited he will sometimes jump on people but responds to correction and will get down quickly. Throughout his life he has gotten along with all types of dogs and was described as being of beta temperament. His previous owner said he is not aware of him ever getting into a fight with another dog. If you are looking for a friend to share your home and active lifestyle, Mr. Handsome is the one for you!
Balto comes with a 30-day money-back trial adoption period.
Spay/neuter, worming, microchip and all age-appropriate shots are always completed before placement, and are included in the adoption fee (suggested minimum $95; more gratefully accepted!)
