Bailey 0704

Bailey is a beagle/Rottweiler mix (our best guess), who was abandoned at a local trailer park. We think, from the condition of his teeth and what little history we could get on his past, he is at least 10 years old - but don't tell him that! Bailey plays like a puppy; tennis balls are his absolute favorite thing in the whole world (well, aside from belly rubs... and doggy treats... and cuddles...).
In spite of his advanced age, the vet pronounced Bailey to be very healthy - heart and lungs both sound great! The only physical problems found were a hot spot or bite area high up on his tail, which is clearing up nicely, and a tendency to sneeze a very small, fine spray of blood once a week or so, which the vet thinks is most likely caused by a harmless nasal polyp. At Bailey's age, the consensus is that it really wouldn't be worth the physical stress and expense of removal surgery, as age will most likely catch up with him long before the polyp became a problem.
Behaviorally, Bailey is a pretty easy-keeper; he is housetrained, doesn't chew inappropriately (but he will demolish a tennis ball if given a chance, and loves a frozen peanut butter Kong now and then), isn't great on leash but, at 40 pounds, is not too hard to handle. He should probably ride kennelled in a car, just because he likes to change his window view regularly (and, if you have power windows, he DOES know how to open them mid-ride). Probably his only major problem, which is actually sort of endearing, is his conversational nature. When he first gets out of his kennel to go play with a volunteer, Bailey will bark incessantly for about the first 15-20 minutes. He usually quiets down a bit after that, though will speak up again if he decides he wants to contribute his opinion about something. We have a short video below (the second one) with sound, so you can hear his voice. Play it over and over again to see if he will drive you crazy (ha). The reason we find it to be somewhat endearing is because, when you look into his big brown eyes, you can tell he is REALLY trying to communicate, and what he most often seems to be communicating is joy. This is a HAPPY dog.
If the barking is too much, just give him a tennis ball to carry around in his mouth. He will still try to bark around it, but he won't put it down, so it muffles the barks a bit!
We know it takes a very special person to be willing to open their heart and home to a senior dog, knowing there is loss ahead much sooner than with a younger dog... however, we are confident that someone out there will fall in love with Bailey, and we all agree he deserves a chance to find a final home, where he can share his love of life and really enjoy himself for the rest of his days.
